Methods for industrial defoaming can include both physical and chemical approaches.

Foam can cause certain troubles in industrial production and reduce production efficiency. Therefore, many factories will find ways to eliminate foam during production. So, how should we eliminate it?

First, we need to know that the basic principle of destroying foam is to change the conditions for foam generation or eliminate the stabilizing factors of foam, so there are two 消泡 methods: physical and chemical.

Defoamers

Physical defoaming refers to changing the conditions for foam generation without changing the chemical composition of the foam solution. Effective physical methods for eliminating foam include external force disturbance, changes in temperature or pressure, and ultrasonic treatment.

Chemical defoaming involves adding substances that interact with foaming agents to reduce the strength of the liquid film in the foam, thereby decreasing foam stability to achieve defoaming. Such substances are called defoamers, most of which are surfactants. Therefore, according to the defoaming mechanism, defoamers should have a strong ability to reduce surface tension, be easily adsorbed on the surface, and have weak interactions between surface-adsorbed molecules with a relatively loose arrangement structure.

There are various types of defoamers, but most of them are non-ionic surfactants. Non-ionic surfactants exhibit antifoaming properties near or above their cloud point and are commonly used as defoamers. Alcohols, especially branched alcohols, fatty acids and their esters, polyamides, phosphates, silicone oils, etc., are also commonly used excellent defoamers.
